History

Education:

Interests

Research:
My research focuses on the sociology of mental health within the area of medical sociology. More specifically, I have primarily examined the social determinants of mental health using the life course perspective and social stress theory. As a medical sociologist, I am especially interested in the harmful mental health consequences of social stress. The social stressors that I have studied include discrimination, immigration during childhood, limited English proficiency, the stigma of mental illness, relationship violence, unfulfilled expectations, disadvantaged family background, job insecurity, and long durations of unemployment and poverty. Many of my studies have highlighted the significant and long-term effects of these stressors on self-reported symptoms of depression. I have used quantitative methods to analyze surveys of various populations (e.g., the U.S. population, Asian Americans, Latino Americans, Filipino Americans in California and Hawaii, Miami-Dade Florida).

Personal:
medical sociology; sociology of mental health and illness; stress and coping; social psychology; life course and aging; the transition to adulthood; discrimination and race/ethnicity
