History

Education:
PhD, Sociology, University of Hawaii at Manoa and East-West Center Population Institute (1996); MA, Sociology and Urban Policy, Wayne State University (1986); BA, Sociology, University of Guam (1984).

Background:
I have been doing applied health and social research in the Pacific for more than 30 years.>

 

Interests

Research:
Medical sociology, demography, social epidemiology, health disparities, social determinants of health.

Personal:
Uses and applications of plants as medicine.

 

Instruction

Teaching:
I have taught undergraduate courses in sociology and graduate courses in sociology and public health.

Advising:
I have been mentoring graduate students and professionals in sociology, epidemiology and public health for more than 20 years in Hawaii and the Pacific, as well as nationally. I have mentored epidemiologists, public health interns and evaluators for the Council of State of Territorial Epidemiologists (CSTE) and National Association of Chronic Disease Directors (NACDD) Epidemiology Mentoring Programs, as well as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Public Health Prevention Service Program-CDC-PHPS, the Maternal and Child Health Information Resource Center-MCHIRC and the National Association of Chronic Disease Directors' Health Equity Council..

 

Awards & Honors

NACDD Special Recognition Award (2007) : The National Association of Chronic Disease Directors, for leadership and development of the Health Equity Interest Group (now the Health Equity Council).
