Welcome to The Department of Sociology’s Undergraduate Program! We want all of our students – our majors, minors, and those who are with us for only a course or two – to have positive and enriching educational experiences.
At the University of Hawai'i at Mānoa, undergraduates may pursue either a Bachelor of Arts Degree (B.A.) or minor in Sociology. Students will gain a broad understanding of sociology by completing dynamic courses across a range of topics. Students may choose to focus their studies on a variety of concentrations including deviance and social control; community and societal studies; business, corporations, and other organizations; sociology and gender; medical and health services, social change and development.
Sociology uses a range of research and statistical techniques for studying social phenomena which can be applied to many areas, including the incidence of crime, client satisfaction, policy evaluations or demographic trends. In addition to preparing people as professional sociologists in academic settings, undergraduate study is an excellent background for careers in government and law, criminal justice, market research, business, community services, public health, urban planning, and public administration. Famous sociology majors include Michelle Obama, Martin Luther King, Jr., and Ronald Reagan.
Completing the requirements for a BA in Sociology will allow you to obtain mastery of the Manoa Institutional Learning Objectives (ILOs) and of the Sociology Department’s program-level Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs). These are listed below.
Institutional Learning Objectives (ILOs) encompass the UH Manoa undergraduate experience as a whole—academic and co-curricular. It is through the combined efforts of faculty, students, staff, and administrators that students achieve the ILOs.
The Sociology Department has established three Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) that support the Institutional Learning Objectives.
